The Road Is The Classroom – The Run Is The Teacher

December 19th, 2011

Sundays run 12/18/11:  14.19 miles 2:20:51

Running in the early-morning sunshineI thought a lot about running while I was on my vacation.  I began to realize how it has truly benefited me not only in my physical shape, but the whole mental improvement thing is no myth.  I have begun to apply the same thoughts that I have while running to my everyday life.  I have always been a grinder, but running has exposed this character trait even more.  I call my blog Run Hard – Always Finish and it’s not just a title but it’s my mantra, the statement I repeat to myself when the end of my run seems so far away.  I told my wife this week that “it’s not the run that I love the most , it’s the finish”  The sense of accomplishment I get from finishing my run, not just a race, but my weekly long run, my tempo run on Tuesday, etc, etc is what I consider my runners high.  Understand I love the run itself, but the finish is best.  The same way I push myself running, I now am pushing myself in my day to day life.  Running is the teacher, and for once I enjoy class.

I am back from the cruise where we had a great time as we always do.  This marked the first time the running habit came with us on the ship.

Some of the highlights:

  • Check out the profile picture, that’s me the Clydesdale churning up sand on the beach in St. Maartin.  First time I have ever tried running barefoot; I will stick to my green Saucony’s!!
  • The track on the ship (Celebrity Eclipse) was not made for running, so I hit the treadmill.  I ran everyday but Friday, and although spitting was not an option, the view was tremendous.
  • My wife who has been recovering from a stress fracture got back into the game and began her comeback!!!!
  • I ate a lot.
  • The slow elevators.
  • There were two families sitting next to our table at dinner and we struck up a conversation.  One of the ladies was a runner (she logged 1000 miles last year) and of course we all instantly bonded. (She also reads the Loop).  Through conversation we realized we had been on other ships at the same time. Funny.
  • I ate a lot.

Am I champ like Tyson, a captain like Kirk, no Employee of the Month because yo I do WORK.  BDK

“Remember, the second most important thing to choosing the right shoe, is choosing the left one.”

“To a runner, a side stitch is like a car alarm. It signifies something is wrong, but you ignore it until it goes away.”

Keep running hard!
